To mark the forthcoming release of his debut album 'Long Way Down', Tom Odell came to New Slang in Kingston (my local and favourite indie venue everrrr) to play a packed-out intimate show. After winning the Critic's Choice award at the Brits earlier this year, and his single 'Another Love' being played absolutely everywhere, it's no wonder his album is so highly anticipated! If you've been living under a rock and haven't heard his indie ballad (think Made in Chelsea emotional scene) then here it is:
So when my boyfriend Jamie was asked by New Slang to do a support slot for Tom Odell it was obviously really exciting! Jamie is a singer/songwriter with a sort of folk sound and a beautiful voice, his influences ranging from Simon and Garfunkel to Johnny Cash to Joanna Newsom, so a real mix of genres! He usually plays with a band; 'Jamie Thorn & The Mystery Pacific', but unfortunately The Mystery Pacific couldn't make it! Check out their music page here. Here is a video I shot, with maybe a few too many zooms, of them busking outside the Sacre Coer in Paris. The song's called 'Shanghai':
Jamie played a great set, even throwing some harmonica in there à la Bob Dylan, which was a real crowd pleaser. He treated us to a few covers as well: 'Slip Slidin' Away' by Paul Simon and 'Georgia On My Mind' by Ray Charles, which really showed off his crooning vocals. Here are some pictures of the handsome Jamie Thorn looking suave on stage:

Finally the man of the hour Tom Odell took to the stage! Resembling a choir boy with his long blonde hair and perched behind his massive piano, which he apparently calls Sylia, you wouldn't expect such a passionate performer! He certainly gave it his all, with the help of his very talented backing band, showing his promise as young modern Elton John. In his more ballad-style songs, there is a definite hint of Chris Martin about him, the way he plays piano, but his distinct voice is very 'now', strong with a Jack Steadman rasp to it.
The stand out song was of course his single 'Another Love' which the crowd seemed to go crazy for, which was played faultlessly with Odell feeding off the brilliant atmosphere. If this gig was anything to go by, Tom Odell's album should be a good listen; his music certainly doesn't lack passion, but at times he still sounds like a music student. But he is young and his style is still maturing! 'Long Way Down' comes out Monday the 24th of June.
If you would like to pre-order Tom Odell's new album 'Long Way Down' you can get it here from Banquet Records where they also have signed copies of the album!

New Slang is on at McCluskies in Kingston every Thursday and is honestly the best indie club around! I go there nearly every week and they always have someone I want to see play there. With bands on first, and then the club night till 2am, it's well worth it, and for under a tenner, cheaper than most gig venues! With Everything Everything, The Mystery Jets, and Aluna George playing in the next few weeks, New Slang is definitely the place to be! Check out upcoming gigs and get tickets here.
